We hired Alleva Construction for 2 projects in our multi-floor townhouse: kitchen remodeling and balcony floor replacement. The both projects were completed and the quality of the completed work is great.
I would like to note more on the balcony project (as seen on the picture). The balcony is exposed to the rain and snow - there is no roof by design. It was problematic when 30+ years old cement-rubber balcony floor started to leak - the construction code back then was not as good as today. Over the decades the cement base floor cracked and water sipped through the top layer of rubber, then to cement base and at the end it was dripping from the ceiling at the floor below. It was happening during "famous" east cost rain storms. 2-3 times a year.
Alleva construction recommended to tear down old floor layers, removing the cement base, use new insulation and few layers of thick glued plywood sheets with the top layer of fiberglass. That they did. The floor came out nice and it stopped the water - there are 3 water-proof layers: 2 plywood ones and the fiberglass. Also new gutter system was installed to prevent discard of extra rain water from the roof directly onto the balcony floor.
There was one issue though. Unfortunately the original wall metal panels had to be taken out before the floor work and then there were put back together. A couple of old panels broke down and there were sights of exposed the insulation from the wall in the corner after the reminder of panels were put back on. The problem was the old panels are not manufactured anymore, it is impossible to find those in the stores. Alleva construction made a decision to replace old panels with the new ones of no charge for us! CEO of the company personally oversaw the completion of the project and made sure there was no water getting into the house. Michael followed up with me after the next rain storm. There was no water - the ceilings are dry!
I am happy with the service and I recommend it!

UPDATED 2/20/24 Alleva was responsive to our original review (below). Mike Alleva listened to suggestions that would have prevented our ordeal, which we are willing to attribute to a labor shortage common in many industries. However, with high turnover, check-ins with new project managers and their customers are essential and would have made a big difference for us. We believe in second chances. As Alleva was eventually responsive, and the shower bar was repaired, we are increasing our stars to 4 for this company.
ORIGINAL POST: We did not have a glowing" experience with Alleva. We contracted for bathroom, linen closet and walk-in closet to be finished in 6-8 weeks. Demolition started in April and was completed in September. Project Manager#1 was inexperienced or incompetent, particularly with organization. Crews showed up only two or three times a week, rarely for a full day. We were told to expect workers and they did not show up or showed up very late, as if our project was an afterthought. At one point we thought Alleva had abandoned our project. This went on for months, in addition to other issues that repeatedly occurred with PM#1.
Then PM#2 was assigned at the beginning of August. Competent and experienced, Jay Strong, was helpful, understanding to our frustrations, and had men working every day on our site, until completion. He did his best to make things right. Jay checked in every day, stopped by often to check progress, and was a true professional and pleasure to work with. My husband had gotten used to watching over the work, and Jay made sure that his concerns were addressed. Unfortunately, Jay Strong is no longer employed with Alleva, which is a shame. Ironically, on the last visit a shower bar was installed with an ungalvanized screw, which is now rusting. Hopefully the rest of their work will hold up during the one year warranty.
Despite the experience, we are satisfied with how the project turned out, but it was still a long and more stress-ridden experience than it had to be. Even trying to get a refund for unused tile and a special order shower drain that was not installed, was an ordeal. We sent emails to the general manager and made numerous phone calls to the office, and only received a refund check after filing a dispute with the credit card company. This issue took 2 months to resolve.
Considering hiring this company? Be wary. Our contract appeared to be complete, however, PM#1 told us Alleva is a contract driven company, and most things would cost extra. For example, the electrician was not allowed to install light switches we were providing unless we paid extra to Alleva. The plumber determined that a pipe had to go through a ceiling, PM#1 said that a soffit could be built to cover it, but it would cost extra. He also said that it would cost extra for Alleva to repair any damage that occurred during the construction, including popped nails. This did turn out to be false, but it was an eye-opener. As Alleva did not provide an itemized contract for the work that they agreed to perform, we probably paid too much for the plumber, electrician and other companies hired by Alleva. Allevas contract also required payments to be made ahead of work being started and they were quick to collect these payments, while we were left waiting for the work to start. It was a very nerve-racking and frustrating experience. As the saying goes Buyer Beware! And this is our advice, too.
