I recently had a concerning encounter with Dr. Mousaw, and I felt compelled to share my experience to provide others with useful insights. While I understand the importance of considering alternative treatment paths, it is disheartening when a professional disregards established protocols without adequate justification.
Prior to my visit with Dr. Mousaw, I consulted with a family member who is an ER Doctor. They provided me with a diagnosis and the standard treatment protocol of prescribing antibiotics and steroids for my condition and told me to see my family doctor as soon as possible. When I explained this to Dr. Mousaw she became tense and then defensive. Perhaps she felt undermined by me mentioning another doctors diagnosis? She said she would not prescribe antibiotics but would prescribe steroids if I wanted. I tried to reason with her that I dont expect her to know every condition and treatment protocol if she wants to investigate it. But she refused to discuss or to contact another specialist or even look at available research on the condition. For my condition, there is a real potential for permanent kidney damage and because the risks of taking penicillin and a week of steroids is very low, the protocol is to provide these drugs to protect against the likelihood of kidney damage (as always, you weigh the risks of the two paths of action).
I pressed her further to provide the antibiotics per the protocol. I have not taken antibiotics in 15 years, so I am not one to overuse them. She started raising her voice that I am the doctor!, I am the one who went to medical school! thats not how I operate! At this point, she also refused to provide me with a prescription for the steroids. I asked her why she was now suddenly also refusing the steroids when 5 minutes ago she said she would. She would not answer me. She folded her arms and refused to talk to me and stormed out of the treatment room. I walked out behind her and raised my voice as I was appalled by her behavior (my apologies to her staff, as they didnt see the interaction from the exam room).
I promptly went to urgent care as I still required treatment. I was seen by a physicians assistant, who immediately recognized the condition and confirmed the treatment protocol. She did need to confer with the lead doctor before prescribing. He also agreed with the treatment protocol, and I walked out with a prescription for both medications.
This unfortunate experience with Dr. Mousaw left me questioning her commitment to evidence-based medicine and her ability to adequately address patients' concerns. As a patient, it is crucial to feel heard and understood while simultaneously placing trust in our healthcare providers' expertise.
Though I appreciate that medical professionals may have different perspectives, it is essential to communicate these differences transparently, providing patients with an informed choice. Regrettably, this aspect was lacking during my visit with Dr. Mousaw.
As a side note, I have seen Dr. Mousaw for several years and she was always pleasant and patient. But this is the first time I came in with an actual complex medical issue.
Ultimately, I would advise future patients to carefully consider whether seeking treatment from Dr. Mousaw aligns with their personal preferences and medical needs. Given my experience, I believe it may be prudent to explore alternative healthcare providers who prioritize evidence-based practices and open communication.
