Laura Patin (Lori), Marriage and Family Therapist and Licensed Professional Counselor, practices in Eagle River, Alaska. She has recently had disciplinary actions taken against her by the Board of Professional Counselors due to violating her profession’s Code of Ethics. She was forced to pay a civil fine of $500 and take three hours of continuing education on the subject matter of Ethics and Law, at her own expense. Despite being found guilty by her profession’s licensing board, Lori has been given multiple chances to correct her wrong-doing and still refuses. All of the details can be found in the consent agreement at the link provided above. Short end, due to Lori’s continued lies, I was sent a bill for $2,288 after being promised repeatedly that this would never happen.

“...It’s no one’s fault. It’s just one of those things and trust me that you will not be penalized in any way for our mistake.”

Me: “I don’t want to end up owing a bunch of money when all my visits are to be covered at 100%. I want to be fair to you.”
Lori: “Trust me, I will not do that to you.”

Being in a profession where vulnerable people come to you for help during a time of crisis, ethical behavior should be a top priority. Her words Trust Me ring loud in my head. I believe it is my civil responsibility to use my voice to shine a light on the dark areas of her practice and her choices.
