Concord is the nation's 202nd largest city located in the state of California. As of 2000, the city has an estimated population of 121,780 residents and is the largest city of Contra Costa County. Concord is a major suburb of the East Bay center of the San Jose/San Francisco Metropolitan Area. Music is a big part of the city, and the annual Concord Jazz Festival draws in huge attention. It used to be the home of the Concord Records, a jazz label, until it was bought in 1999.  The Blue Devils Drum and Bugle Corps call Concord home, and is made up of talented musicians from all over the world. The Blue Devils are the most decorated corps of its kind in the history of Drum Corps International.
The city is well known for the Concord Naval Weapons Station, located to the north of the city proper. It was established in 1942 and served as a WWII armament storage depot, supplying through Port Chicago. The station supported war efforts throughout the latter for half of the 20th century, and was recently announced to be retired. The Port Chicago disaster of 1944 is still thoroughly known throughout the city, when munitions on board a cargo ship exploded killing 320 soldiers, merchant seamen and civilians present.
