We are part of the school and moved from a local public school where we completed kindergarten. We love the school. Among its strengths: project based education (kids get depth of learning rather than transactionally hopping across disjointed exercises and concepts every 10 mins), low student to teacher ratio (which means teachers are not stressed, truly attuned, and can tailor approaches for each student), very strong and friendly parent community, phenomenal art and emotional development program.

I give Matheia 5 stars because after 5 years of having my kids educated there I am very pleased with how much my children have learned to enjoy learning. Where there have been challenges and upsets we have found support and solutions. The small class sizes, passionate teachers and commitment to making learning fun is truly exceptional at Matheia. The tuition remains comparably modest for one of the best kept secrets for pre-k thru 5 facilities.

A wonderful school, rich in science, math, art, and reading. We have a kindergartener there and he loves the program and truly enjoys his time at school.

Matheia is one of the best kept secrets in Ballard. We wouldn't have discovered it as an option for our son had not our preschool teachers highly recommended it. They sent both of their daughters there and raved about the positive aspects of the small school learning environment. We toured and applied to several private and gifted schools in the area, but Matheia stood out to us because the small class size of under 10 students offered something different than any other option, and the kids just seemed to be thriving and so engaged in the curriculum.  Because the grades are small, students integrate with each other through age groups, and there is consistent mentorship going on at all levels. The kids rotate classes and so they get time with each teacher in each subject, and every month there are innovative elective options. And because there is so much individualized attention from teachers, kids are able to learn and accelerate at their own pace. Integration into Matheia has been seamless for our son and we have had a really positive experience. It's a great community and we'd highly recommend this school if you are looking to take advantage of the benefits of small class size learning!

I'm so happy that our family found Matheia! It is a very small school that has the feel of a cross between a single-room schoolhouse and a private tutoring program. Rather than the homeroom model used by most elementary schools, Matheia takes a specialist approach. Kids start the day in reading groups that are sorted by reading level, not grade. They then move through specialist classes with their grade level group, with a long break for a full-school outdoor PE and lunch/play time and with mixed-aged electives at the end of the day. What I love is that my son really feels like he is part of a bigger community, yet his core learning experiences involve such small classes that the teachers can truly differentiate for each students unique needs and abilities.
