(1001 S Jackson St, Seattle, WA 98104 *Word: It's not the grocery store on 12th and Jackson. Don't get confused.) This is a great storefor grocery needs but it's easy to miss with its modest signage, a single door pane is often open and no windows and its allocation is easy to drive right by because you're on a main street. However, it's also easy if you are walking by or exercising, walking forward, walking backwards, jogging, running or doing cartwheels... it's uphill a bit or down from you...beats fighting traffic, always. They have a small parking lot and it's all a manageable size and endeavor for many of your list items. If you're looking for Vietnamese food, herb, canned items, Pacific fresh seafood or Vietnamese instant coffee or relics this is an easy, dependable stop and they've got a kind and hardworking crew. They already supply many of the produce for some of the restaurants close by where you may have eaten last evening or where you will eat tonight. Not shopping for Vietnamese ingredients? No problem. Unfamiliar with such fare but require some delicious, fresh fish, meats like beef, pork belly bacon you will find this store FUNfamiliar and Dong Hing has those proteins too. Butchers are on site, scales for clams by the pound are available and if someone doesn't speak english just ask another customer or one of the nice stock ladies. These ladies are everywhere rolling dollies around with boxes and these ladies are just as tough as they are beautiful and they will help you if you're polite. One of these young ladies helped me find the right instant coffee last time. Thank you, again. Personally, I find the vegetable and fruit selection outstanding considering the overall size of the grocery market. THIS IS KEY- the fact that Vietnamese culture is a shopping daily culture, cooking at home is a sport and fresh ingredients are instrumental in Vietnamese recipes which make such selections reliably FRESHER and CONSISTENTLY AVAILABLE so you may select your fruits and vegetables FASTER and EASIER. This fact means they have an aggressive purchasing power so greater quantities are rotated faster, cleaner and their capture clientele demands it so they have more in relative quantity than most western grocery markets three times their size! I recently bought some oranges and bok choy and they were fantastic. The store area is nearly halfway full of ALL freshness between protein, veggies+herbs and fruit. Not only is this place clean, it smells like it too and much less spoiling of produce or brown, yellowing twigs of herbs, fronds and less sifting for the last one or two of something that resembles a crown of broccoli or a carrot that's not an heirloom carrot because it's turning purple, lol. The sellers are committed to this clientele and often that's the first fruit they get,so to speak. Save time, support you and the local micro economy as you shop here too in addition to the other markets in this community. By supporting these families and the International District you retain it's experience-an experience unlike anywhere and unlike most places in this country. If it's simply an individual orange or you're making a fresh salad for one hundred rabbits or buying bacon for your Sunday brunch, beef for the backyard grill or you just enjoy meeting new people and exploring different economies, foods and cultural ceremonies this place is open to you and for you.
