To start, I would like to give you some context on our experience with Michelle Perkey with Shelburne Financial. My wife is a physician, and I am a self-employed full-time student who had used Michelle to prepare our tax returns for several years. Over the period between 2018 2020, we paid Michelle over $3000 in fees for her service. For the most part, we were satisfied with her service. She seemed knowledgeable, and although we could have had our taxes prepared for less, we thought her expertise would be valuable in terms of helping us find tax breaks. It turned out not to be the case as I will explain the course events that led me to write this review.
In the early part of 2020, we met with Michelle as we do almost every year to review our situation and give her the necessary documents to prepare our taxes. We asked her specifically to look into a question we had about our tax preparation for the upcoming tax year. Michelle had our documents for eight weeks, and we had not heard any word back from her about the question we had about our taxes. Finally, I reached by phone to Michelle during the first week of April to see where she was in the process of preparing our return. She responded that we just so happen to be the next file on the desk, and she would have it done by Friday of the same week.
Two weeks later, after not hearing from Michelle, I reached out to her on April 13th, 2020, to see when we could expect our returns. It had been over two months at this point since our initial meeting. Her response was, Yes, it has been completed; it just needs to be reviewed. I should be able to have the result to you by Wednesday or Thursday. On April 21st, we still had not seen our returns, so I reached out again to Michelle via email and her response this time was, The return is complete and just needs to be processed. Now, if you are thinking at this point, we immediately received our return, you would be wrong. No, I had to reach out again to Michelle and April 27th, 2020, so to let her know once again we havent received our copy of the return, she said she would have her assistant Judith send us.
We finally did receive our return on April 27th, and we signed them and filed them. But that is where the service level goes from bad to worse. I dont typically double-check my C.P.As work. However, being a finance student, I thought I might take a look at some different areas of my return to see how they are calculated. Immediately I noticed some glaring errors on our tax return. It was missing some of the basic deductions. I emailed Michelle directly about my concerns, and her answer was not to my satisfaction as to why she left out an elementary deduction like my vehicle mileage for the use of my car for business. So I began to dig deep into our past returns and research tax laws. In just a few days, I was able to find over $9000 that we could get returned to us, and that was only for two years worth of returns.
I believe people make mistakes in business and feel that everyone should have an opportunity to show make things right. If Michelle had admitted she made a mistake and worked to reassure my wife and me that she would make this mistake right, I would not be writing this review today. Even after all these mistakes, it took Michelle over two more months to amend our returns, and only after I had to reach out to here on multiple times to get her to move things along in the process. In addition to that, her attitude the whole time she never apologized or even gave us an indication she had any remorse for the lack of customer service our consultation we have received. We informed her that we would never be using her service again. If you are looking for a C.P.A. who will give advice, be timely, and communicate well, then I suggest you continue your search because that was not our experience at all with Michelle or Shelburne Financial Services.
