The owner of this gallery treated me unprofessionally and with unnecessary pretension. As an artist myself, I was happy to support the artwork of other artists featured there, but my experience wasnt worth it. When I came into the gallery to purchase an art piece, the owner made a rude and unnecessary comment regarding my ability to pay for the piece. Her general behavior and remarks made my sister and I feel as if we werent seen as classy enough to be inside the gallery without damaging the artworks. When I paid for the art piece, the owner requested that I leave the work at the gallery for three weeks in order for her to continue showcasing it with the other pieces. I was happy to accommodate this, because I wanted to support the artist in gaining exposure. However, after a little over two weeks, the owner called me to tell me that I had to pick it up either that day or the next day, otherwise I would have to wait even more weeks because she was leaving town. I told her that I work and commute so I wouldnt be able to pick it up during the restricted hours that her gallery keeps open. She told me that I could come later, and that I could simply call her and she would respond. Even though her sudden notice/change of conditions and restricted hours made it difficult for me as a working person to accommodate her, I made time to arrive the day after she called. Contrary to what she told me, she wasnt there and didnt answer her phone. I live three blocks away from this place. She has my address. It would have been easy for her (and neighborly) to take accountability for her change of plans and just walk the three blocks and drop it off like a decent person. She also said that she mails pieces to other customers, yet she didnt bother to offer this either. So who knows when Ill hear from her again. If she hadnt been so rude when I first interacted with her this wouldnt be as much of an issue. But this, combined with the inconsiderate and dismissive way that she handled everything matters. It reaffirms the trope that art is something that must be kept sequestered away in austere spaces for only the wealthy, instead of something that is accessible and enriching for the communities it comes from.
