First a little history, before these tunnels were modernized for car traffic there was only the 1 tunnnel, thats now the inbound tunnel (going downtown). The honking tradition is left over from a deadly crash and pileup in 1928 in that tunnel when the old light mysteriously turned off and 8 people died, including a famous inventor. When that happened a big posted warning requiring inbound drivers to honk on Friday and Saturday nights (the crash happened on the weekend apparently).
So please observe the tradition by only honking fridays and saturdays inbound tunnel only. Dont just randomly honk all the time either tunnel.

The Vista Ridge tunnels were built between 1969 and 1970.
Because theyre the only major tunnels in Portland, residents LOVE to blow their horns when passing through. Dont be surprised if you hear car horns the whole way through.
The tunnels also have a curve at the west end which can be a bit nerve wracking if youre a newcomer.
