About
Kachka

Representing dishes from the former Soviet Union through a Pacific Northwest lens, Kachka is a culinary gem that has captured the hearts of diners around the globe. Established in 2014 by Bonnie and Israel Morales, this Portland-based restaurant offers an exquisite dining experience. Chef/Co-Owner Bonnie Morales, a James Beard Award nominee, skillfully prepares dishes inspired by her heritage as a first-generation daughter of Jewish immigrants from Belarus. The menu at Kachka showcases a vibrant array of flavors, with highlights including dumplings, cured fish, and pickled vegetables. Complementing the culinary delights is an extensive selection of over 50 vodkas, craft cocktails, and a thoughtfully curated list of Eastern European beer and wine. Visitors can also relish the distinctive taste of Kachka's Horseradish Vodka, available at various retail liquor stores throughout the West Coast.

Kachka's reputation extends far and wide, earning praise from numerous publications and garnering attention from popular series like Netflix's "Somebody Feed Phil" and the Emmy award-winning docuseries "The Migrant Kitchen." Tucked away upstairs, Kachka Lavka serves as a deli and grocery, allowing patrons to savor housemade charcuterie, cured fish, and freshly baked Eastern European breads. Additionally, Kachka Lavka offers a tempting selection of frozen dumplings and imported grocery items for an authentic taste of the region. Kachka and Kachka Lavka are currently open Thursday-Tuesday, with the convenience of online ordering available for Kachka's dumplings and merchandise on their website. With its warm hospitality and lively ambiance, Kachka promises an unforgettable dining experience that combines exceptional cuisine with a rich cultural journey.

image Our only critique with this place was the main dishes. I say stick with the appetizers, 3-5 of which is more than enough for 2. We had some good signature cocktails as well as really interesting schnapps/aqavit flavored with birch, honey, peppers, etc., things you wouldn't think. We had good appetizers, including smoked fish and a duck potato salad that were both great. The Herring in a Fur Coat, a Russian classic, was just OK - needed more seasoning and/or acidity, but not sure how it's prepared traditionally. Our mains were a dumpling dish, which is basically like a ravioli, and it was bland and uninteresting. I had stuffed cabbage with a tomato sauce. It was very basic, like a dish your grandmother would make - but not something at a high-end restaurant - the tomato sauce was fresh, but uninteresting. The filling was just ground beef and rice and overcooked to the point of mealiness. Overall we liked it, and because of the atmosphere and good drinks and good service and apps, it deserves a 4/5, just avoid the main dishes.

image The food is good but experimental so be open minded, it's not your typical Soviet fare. Very nostalgic atmosphere, I wish they had some 90s disco after hours:)

image This is one of my favorite places to eat in Portland. The service is exceptional and the food incredible. Whenever someone comes to visit from out of town this is a place we take them. Don't pass up the infused vodkas and pickle juice!
Dietary restrictions: My husband can't have gluten and there are options for him.
