I love that Portland has so many independent bookstores, this one being in my top for sure. I can go a few months without swinging by and seeing what to read next.

New Renaissance bookshop is a new age store in an old Victorian style house. When I was walking through the front door, I thought the store was gonna be pretty small or something like that, but it was huge. There are tons of cool little nicknacks and stuff to look at. I thought I was just walking into a bookstore filled with books, but no, there were tons of little accessories such as wind chime's, Terrell cards, religious items of many different religions, crystals and rocks, chakra bowles, Jewelry, clothing, toys, and many other things to help with your mental health and well-being As well as your Speartriality. They have a Zen garden home dcor section upstairs. Be careful because the stairs are a little creeky. If you do bring your kids, this store is kid friendly. If you want to know something about an item such as price or details, the staff is always there to help. Overall, I had a nice experience at this place, just looking around and exploring. And if you're curious too, I would suggest coming here and having a look for yourself to see what you can find.

I was in with my sister this past Saturday (10/28/23) and was followed the WHOLE entire time. The weather was cold out, like 30 (give or take) so I had a big puffy coat on and was profiled and followed the ENTIRE time by this older white woman with glasses and a limp and an older, short, white, bald man with glasses and a blue cost. I could hear them talking about me saying things like which one is it? and where is she now? And I got eyes on her. They literally followed me everywhere in the shop, I mean EVERYWHERE! This was a horrible, uncomfortable and unnecessary experience. The staff in this establishment NEED to take some Diversity Equity and Inclusion (DEI) courses ASAP before a lawsuit gets filed for discrimination. This is a serious matter and is absolutely not the way to run a business. This is really unfortunate because the establishment is absolutely adorable, and I would have loved to had the opportunity to be treated equally and actually shop without being followed and looked at as a thief. I bought a wonderful book for my partner, but not sure if I will ever go back due to the awful experience that I had being profiled, discriminated, and followed.

Business Response on Google Dec 4th, 2023
Dear Ashley,Your description of being followed throughout your visit is troubling and contradicts the core values of respect and inclusivity that we uphold as a business. We spend a lot of time working with our staff on mindfulness and inclusive behaviour. We want our staff to be present and available for those who need help out in the wings of the store while also making sure to not make anyone feel followed or profiled in any way. Your concerns were thoroughly discussed during our recent staff meeting, and we are actively developing strategies to ensure that all our guests feel welcomed and at ease while shopping in our store. We are so sorry that you didn't have a good experience with us. We hope you will consider giving us another chance. Sincerely,Claire Potter Store Manager
