First visit was fantastic, everyone in the office and the doctor himself was on the ball. We determined what work I needed done, what the game plan was to do so, and made the next appointment. Since - as I explained to the doctor - the above issues cause White Coat Syndrome (high blood pressure during visits only), he prescribed valium for visit #2.
Visit #2 was good. I took the valium as prescribed, we got the work done and were good. BP was high but after a while of sitting (and probably thanks to the valium) it went down. Set up visit #3 to continue the work.
Visit #3, the dentist incomprehensibly turns stupid. I found out (too late to fix without a weeks-long reschedule) forgot to prescribe valium. Fine, I figured we'd do it without. Got in there, and my BP was high again. But this time, rather than letting me sit like we'd done before, or taking into account the valium which he himself admitted "I probably should have remembered to prescribe that again", the doctor said he couldn't do the work with high BP and sent me away (hour drive each way). I explained that I could show him in my medical app the history of my BP readings, and how NONE of them are high, but he didn't care. He stated if I got a medical waiver from my dr. he would work on me, but not without.
I went to the doctor, and we did a number of readings both in his office and in my home over the course of several weeks. BP was always on average 118/78-80. My doctor's reaction, in fact, when I told him the dentist's concerns was "Is this guy new or just slow?! Has he never heard of White Coat Syndrome?". Nevertheless, he signed the release and I booked the next visit.
Yet, somehow, visit #4 was even worse - with such a lack of common sense from the dentist I still cannot quite understand it. I gave the ladies up front the release well before the visit, and they stated the doctor had reviewed and was good with it. Then upon arrival I showed them my BP readings from that morning (my dr. and I figured play it safe). When they got me seated, and the BP was high, it's like the last 3 visits and 20 minutes of conversation leaked out the dentist's ears when he wasn't looking. He asked me "is your bp always this high?!" like we hadn't been talking about it for a half hour almost. Then he tells me "I know I SAID if you brought in the waiver I would do the work. And it is obvious that your BP is fine under normal circumstances. But it is high and I don't want to do the work for fear of liability." He then suggested I find a dentist that employs an anesthesiologist that can sedate me, and wished me good luck.
I asked the dentist first WHY he said the waiver would be enough if he had no intention of working if the blood pressure was high, waiver or not, and got back "yeah, I don't know why I said that - you're probably mad at me huh". Then I asked, why not prescribe the valium like before since we KNEW this was an issue, answer: "Yeah, I should have remembered to do that". Basically every question I asked came down to a stunning lack of common sense on his part.
But the best part, walking out the office manager asks me to wait, and tells me they DO employ an anesthesiologist. They have to schedule it, but they can do sedation, if that is what the dentist wants, RIGHT THERE IN THEIR OFFICE. Of course my immediate statement was to the effect he is not even competent enough to KNOW what services are available in his own practice. Based on the smirks from the ladies up front, I'm guessing the ignorance is no shock.
Being a business owner myself, I try to give people the benefit of the doubt when it comes to a bad experience. But when it CONSISTENTLY gets worse each visit, AND the poor service comes down to the dr. (the person who SHOULD be most concerned with getting it right as it is HIS reputation) just plain not being able to think his way through the situation, I just cannot understand it.
