My daughter attended a presentation by this Atlanta based company this past February. She is a sophomore in college. She was drawn to the company's mission statement of teaching students how to fund their college education debt free by "writing to win scholarships". Their tutorial program "Tools For Success", boast that with proper training and guidance students can obtain scholarship funding and attend college debt free. The program cost $250. She was also interested in editing and feedback of her essay writing and purchased ten essay critiques in addition to the program for an additional fee of $75. She spent a grand total of $325 of her hard earned college dollars on a program she was initially enthusiastic about.
Her experience with Inspiring Students To Excel In Higher Education and the Director Ms.Sheryl Smith has not been as beneficial as she hoped it would be. From the very first weeks in the program,upon receiving the first critique from Ms. Smith on an essay, my daughter was not pleased. She expressed this frustration to me (and then voiced her concerns in a conversation and several emails over time to Ms. Smith) that her editing was not meeting her expectations. My daughter articulated that shed expected more detailed edits and fedback on her writing. She asked for specific and clear direction with the editing regarding sentence structure, whether the essays written fit the prompts given, were her writings engaging; any of which was barely addressed in Ms. Smiths feedback. Sheryl Smith almost immediately took offense and began treating my young adult daughter like a child that needed her mother to handle her affairs! Not only was it rude and an ultimate slap in the face to my daughter, who was the paying client; but it was also very unprofessional as a business. It wasnt just one time it was several times, to the point my daughter simply could no longer take the hyper-sensitive nature of every email she would receive, it got to be draining.
I rate this business 2star because Ive seen first-hand how the owner interacts with her clients. She seems very personable & well-spoken. Sheryl Smith also responds to emails in a timely fashion. As for the quality of her feedback, she does not understand that her work (editing) is subjective. It is not going to please everyone. Thats not to say, its not good work however, everyone wont love what you have to offer. Finally, I dont know what professional business owner thinks its OK to take on a paying client and then make reference that they should respect her as their elders. Respect is earned.
Working within Inspiring Students quite the roller coaster experience to say the least.
