I had a recent negative experience with a contractor named Gerie Gilbert, owner of Care For Your Castle Home. I want to share for awareness. Gerie built us an awesome shower 3 years ago (real deal concrete base, tile, etc). This was actually the only improvement weve made on our house in five years where we hired a contractor, So we did not take the decision lightly. About three months ago my wife and I noticed a leak in our first floor ceiling, just under this second floor shower. I cut into the ceiling to find water running down and across The subfloor from the floor above. Geries foreman Who originally worked on the job three years ago, came out to look at it and was very humble in saying that he was positive this was a mistake during installation. He was sure Gerie would simply repair it for free, hed make it right. My wifes father is career plumber and noted that he had built scores of the showers, none of them should be leaking anytime before 10 years, but most commonly, they last 15 or 20 years. he encouraged me to reach back out to Gerie, with kindness and seek his assistance for the job he did. I repeated this evaluation with more than one additional qualified contractor. All of which agreed this was a very short lifespan for a shower like this. To our surprise, Gerie came back with a repair cost of approximately 70% of the original build price. I asked him if he would be willing to give us a break, as it was clearly an error on their part, and not our responsibility to pay more than half of the original build cost again to repair a problem he created. Gerie wouldnt budge, and further stated I am not convinced its an install problem since nothing happened for almost 3 years. We eventually hired another wonderful contractor at the recommendation of Rob Smith Who did the repair for approximately 35% less than Geries offer (and did great work). Heres where I decided to make this post for all of your awareness: The repair team took a picture of the exact area where Geries team made an error, it was very clear. I sent it to Gerie- for the first time in our three-year relationship, no response. He bailed when it mattered most and hes unwilling to take responsibility for his errors. Ive been told by several contractors since that this behavior is frowned upon in the Atlanta community and that it would be helpful to my neighbors to share the story. This isnt to say that Gerie does bad work, its to say that if he makes a mistake, hes not willing to make it right and thats bad business.
