My experience with the Crisis Center of Tampa Bay has been disheartening, as the employees on the frontlines, particularly those at the 2-1-1 hotline, appear to be drained of energy and time, operating with minimal support from higher-ups. A concerning aspect is the directive for hotline workers to use fake names, seemingly to sidestep any potential backlash from callers. Moreover, the office environment is far from ideal, with unsanitary conditions including bodily fluids smeared across surfaces. Disturbingly, it has come to my attention that individuals serving in the SA role are not licensed nurses and have been observed making inappropriate jokes about victims in the break room. Despite the Crisis Center's efforts to present a positive image to the public and media, the reality seems to be a hostile and toxic workplace.

I see a ton of mixed reviews, but Ill have to agree with the other people that rated this location poorly :( I was in the area for a specialist doctor appointment and was feeling incredibly mentally unstable due to some really intense life changing stressors that have been going on, I felt uncomfortable driving an hour home feeling this way and I seriously needed somebody in person to be with. I remembered seeing this place on the way to the doctor, so I stopped by. I was motioned to ring the bell, so I did. I told whoever was at the desk that I needed help and she didnt ask what for, she without a beat just told me that they dont do walk ins and Ill need an appointment. She gave me a number to call to make an appointment and sent me away, so I went back to my car and had a panic attack followed by a depression meltdown in the parking lot for an extended period of time before collecting myself to be able to drive home :\ I apologize for not being able to schedule my own mental crisis, Ill think about it next time :) honestly what good is a crisis center if you cant get help in a crisis??? Could have at least asked me what was wrong and referred me someplace else?

Hi Sierra. We appreciate you sharing your thoughts. While we do provide appointment-based trauma counseling and sexual assault services on-site, our 24 hour crisis intervention is done through the specialists and care coordinators who work in our contact center. They are trained to provide support over the phone and through the community resources we have through the contact center database. To ensure 24-hour safety for our staff, we encourage people who walk up to the building, and who have a cell phone, to connect to the best possible support by calling 988 or 211. If someone does not have a phone, we have a dedicated call box on the building that rings to our 24-hour contact center. We do want to support you! You can call 988 any time of day to connect to an intervention specialist.
