I was visiting SF and reached out to Romulo about a drop in class. Ended up dropping in twice and everyone was so incredibly nice, welcoming and helpful!

This is a long overdue review... RMBJJ hits that perfect sweet spot of: (1) chill vibes, (2) helpful and friendly students and instructors, (3) affordable pricing, and of course (4) quality instruction. Are you looking to get started with BJJ? Romulo's got you. Want to enter into competition? Cool, Romulo's got you. Want to learn practical self-defense without having to get your face punched in? You guessed it, Romulo's got you. I started at Romulo's after getting involved in a robbery incident on Mission and 6th in 2018. Before coming here I'd done some nogi training a decade+ ago with two other schools but most of it was forgotten by the time I started. Fast forward a few years later and I've made close friends with folks at all the belt levels, learned some really great techniques and tricks, and even got to compete at the local and international levels. If you're on the fence, try out a class (I recommend Saturday mornings); it's free and they're not gonna try to sucker you into a contract with it. Or if trial classes aren't your thing, just go for it. You'll be grateful that you did (I know I am).

Romulo facilitates a culture that is instantly friendly - I felt like part of the crew day one. I went from knowing absolutely nothing to feeling reasonably confident in three months. There is no bravado or machismo; purely a dedication to the training, which everyone takes seriously. Romulo does a fantastic job of elaborating the sequence of movements and positions that are involved to escape or submit, as well as referencing moves from the previous week. Each lesson bleeds into the next seamlessly. I can't imagine a better experience for a first-timer.

Hands down the best school in SF. Ive been to a lot of martial arts gyms, but Romulos place is different. It really feels like a family and the quality of BJJ that you learn in unparalleled

I never got to express my gratitude for Romulo & his gym - once upon a time many years back I was in a deep depression. I always trained in standup but never tried BJJ, until Romulo! I can't stress how amazing Romulo and the other students that go here are. The blue belts took it pretty easy on me allowing me to practice drills during sparring, but they also didn't let me win. That sums up the spirit of Romulo - friendly, supportive, but not gonna go easy on you! Random but memorable- I remember he set me up to spar someone that was at least 50+ lbs on me after I was starting to hold my own against other white belts. I got so frustrated and felt hopeless w this heavy guy sitting on my chest (LITERALLY) at one point that I tapped. I looked over to Romulo and he shook his head. Since then, I never tapped for such reasons to simply give up. He ALWAYS encouraged me and praised when I pulled off something good, saying "GOOD JOB STEVE" (though my name is not Steve I always rolled with it! lol)There was once a super aggressive white belt who showed up out of no where, seemed like he used to go there and decided to drop in. This guy tore my favorite Jagermeister shirt grabbing super aggressive and pulling (not even on my gi), but guess what? I tapped him out all three times in different ways, thanks to Romulo's amazing teaching and all the other students who really built me up. I refuse to believe there is a better BJJ gym in the city other than Romulo's. Many years later to this day, I have very fond memories including the one where I let Romulo down by tapping out via butt-on-chest.
