Dead man found decomposed for a while !! San Francisco officials are investigating why the body of a resident of the Alder Hotel who died days earlier was found only after bodily fluids seeped from under the door of a bathroom. Lea Suzuki/The Chronicle

A unit in this building had to utilize an extension cord plugged in at a hallway receptacle as the unit was without electricity for over a year. The resident issued several maintenance requests over the period and the request went through 3 different property managers before it was eventually resolved. Black mold, german cockroaches, mice infestation, fruit fly infestation. Psychiatric patients screaming and fighting at all hours day and night. The building is considered permanent housing yet the post office lists it as a commercial building therefore I am unable to have certain mail sent to my unit and mail is provided to the front desk and front desk employees sort the mail into unit boxes that residents do not have access to, you must have the desk fetch your mail. I have lost many documents and packages over the last 4 years. Many units are sized differently, from utility closet sized units to units that appear to fit a full sized bed and small table. However, residents are not shown their unit before signing the lease and all residents pay the same amount in rent even if other residents have more space. Death of residents is suspiciously common. Non residents, folks who are unhoused from the streets manage to wander in the building. The elevator is constantly broken and the building is not accessible as to get to the elevator you must be able to walk up 3 steps yet several residents use wheelchairs and walkers and have a very difficult time coming in and leaving the building. The lounge with television and computers has no working computers and the only restroom on the first floor in the lounge is for staff and residents are forbidden from utilizing this restroom. There is no kitchen in the building and toaster ovens and hotplates are lease violations. They recently had several unit fires and made candles and incense lease violations. The guest policy is limited to 10 nights in a month for 1 guest. The trash rooms do not abide by city ordinance and there is no option for recycling and The trash rooms are always overflowing with garbage and smells horrific. This is a waste to those who think tax payer money is being used wisely in these programs. Residents express cleaner living environments and mentally healthier living environments on the streets of san Francisco rather than within this building. Case management is in the building but is not effective for many of the clients needs. There is no education provided as to how residents can move on from this program and obtain actual permanent housing. Far too many residents are found dead in their rooms. Please do not live here if you have a choice in the matter. I know we didn't have a choice and this place has taken a toll on too many.

Thank you Asteria and D. Vet! All these, not to mention whatever pathologies have run of this place! no need of personal contact, and still these things pop up, where there was nothing in previous residence.

This is a supportive housing SRO, the city considers this site to be permanent housing but their isn't even a community kitchen for residents and residents rooms are literally the size of a parking space and comes equiped with a bathroom sink only. Restroom and shower facilities are shared and the residents suffer from cockroach and mice infestations as well as little ventilation as rooms become scorching hot in the summer months. Many shared bathrooms are covered in black mold. Residents seem to die at a clip of at least one a month. There are often emergencies like false fire alarms or residents jumping out their windows into the center ventilation shaft of the building. Also residents can be heard screaming at all hours and often become violent with each other. The front gate is normally staffed however often short staffed and gate will be prayed open for any person from the street to roam the building. Residents often have their rooms broken into and personal items stolen. The building is very dirty and has a terrible smell. This is not a safe environment for vulnerable people.
