Dr. Gulati is a wonderful doctor that took care of me when I really needed the help which is when you need to see a good cardiologist. She really listened to me and was really open to my ideas on care and not over medicating to take care of my problems. I havent had a doctor who listened to me this way and I really appreciated the time spent with her and the treatment that I am getting.

Initially, my mom had an appointment for July 5th (my mother's annual cardiology appointment is typically in July). I was contacted by Banner University Heart Institute to reschedule the appointment due to Dr. Gulati was not going to be in the office on July 5th. I was going to contact the office, anyway, to see if I could move up the appointment because my mom had been hospitalized at the end of March and her PCP recommended to have my mom seen earlier rather than later if possible because she was diagnosed with a PE. This office was going to reschedule her for August and I explained the hospitalization and the fact my mom is 100 years old.  The scheduler said they didn't have authority to schedule earlier than August and would have me talk to someone who could see if it was possible to have her seen earlier. This call took place on May 16th and I was told she could be seen on May 22nd at 9:30 am. I was told at this time that Dr. Gulati didn't manage PEs and I said that's fine, she still needs to be seen for her yearly cardiology well check. We live in NE Mesa, so it's quite the drive to Central Phoenix.  We arrived at approximately 9:15 (I had requested the new patient paperwork be sent to me via email so this was completed beforehand and we brought it with us). I gave the gentleman at the front desk my mom's name, date of birth, and let him know we have a 9:30 with Dr. Gulati.  He kept looking at his computer screen and then asked when did we make the appointment.  I explained I received a call the week before and I spoke to what I thought was an MA who gave me the date and time. He asked us to take a seat.  After calling me up to the reception desk 2 more times and telling me each time he was going to "work it out", I was told we do not have an appointment and that Dr. Gulati has to go to the hospital and no other doctor was willing to see my mom because Dr. Gulati was the only doctor who had the specialty to see my mom.  WHAT?!?!  My mom has a stent...that's it. I told him I didn't mean to shoot the messenger, but I was pissed because my mom wasn't being seen through no fault of ours, but what really got my goat is NO ONE in their office took responsibility.  Listen, I understand mistakes happen; I'm as guilty as the next person.  It would have gone a long way for SOMEONE from their office to have said, "I am so sorry, I messed up."  And then to add insult to injury, Dr. Gulati couldn't make room in her schedule to see my mom????  Really?  A fellow colleague of hers (I believe they went to school together) had enough faith in Dr. Gulati to pass on her (Dr.Walsh) patient and forwarded all her medical records well in advance of the scheduled appointment. I received a call later in the afternoon of the 22nd from their office from the person who I spoke to when I was given the new date and time for the appointment.  She explained to me that she is the triage nurse and has better knowledge of the doctors' schedules than the folks in the front office that schedule the appointments.  She said she doesn't have access to actually schedule appointments; that she has to pass on the information to the schedulers for them to input and this is how the mistake happened; the scheduler missed the message sent by the nurse with the date and time. Our PCP is also a part of the Banner family and the MAs have access to input appointments.  Why wouldn't someone who works more closely with the physicians not have access to make an appointment? We will not be going back to this practice because if Dr. Gulati couldn't accommodate to see a 100 year old patient because of a scheduling mess up through no fault of the patient, what could we expect from Dr. Gulati in a dire situation? Their scheduling practices, and who has access, is in serious disarray and needs repaired.  Dr. Gulati also needs to step down off her pedestal and make accommodations for when her staff messes up.
