How Much Time Are You Spending on Tasks?

It's surprising how much time can be wasted on mundane tasks if you're not careful. Start to track your time over the next week to see exactly how much you're using up and what you're spending it on. It will probably be a big revelation, that will help you realize that there's actually a lot more time in your day than you realize. You jut need to start spending it on the right things.

Are You Using Your Commute Wisely?

Some people are fortunate enough to jump on the subway, take a city bus, or carpool to work. For those people, there's valuable time to be had during that commute. Use it to get your to-do list carved out, plan out some projects, or get some phone calls made.

Even if you have to drive to work, take the time to mentally prepare for your day. Do some breathing exercises, listen to some books on tape, or use a hands-free handset to get some phone calls out of the way.

Are You Always Available?

The 90-minute method means you work for 90 minutes at at time and then take a break. 90 minutes is about as long as a person can go before they begin to develop a mental fog. Once that mental fog sets in, you're no longer productive. You could be sitting there working on a task and find yourself getting stuck. That's not useful to anyone.

You can’t talk about productivity without talking about your health and wellbeing. This all starts with the quality and quantity of rest you’re getting. In fact, a study conducted by Harvard found that insomnia lead to a loss of 11.3 days’ worth of productivity per year. so how can we address this problem? An obvious place to start is your bedroom. Three easy areas to pay attention to are:

  • Light pollution: Light pollution is any light that is creeping into your room while you sleep. This could be a light from another room you can see under your door or a streetlamp outside your window. Make your room as dark as possible for the best night’s sleep.
  • Your mattress: The mattress may be the hardest one to get right since everyone has different needs. Side sleepers, stomach sleepers and sleeper with back pain all have different needs from their mattress. It’s critical to find the right mattress to support your needs.
  • Room temperature: Temperature plays a significant role in your sleep. If it’s too hot your body is prone to wake in the middle of the night to try and get cooler. It may sound low, but research suggests your room be 65 degrees Fahrenheit.
