I supported an Atlanta county FOP for 10-15 years if not more, a couple of thousand out of my own pocket. Only the pandemic shutdown saved me from wasting more money - see MAX documentary Telemarketers.
I no longer answer my phone - unless the phone # is in my personal contacts - legit callers leave a VM. If you do answer your phone, ask VERY specific questions - how much of my donation will actually fund "shop with a cop" etc. If they say less than 75% or 100% - both RED FLAGs. At least 75% of your donation should go to the charity not Admin costs & 100% is suspect - they have to pay administrative expenses.
Check them out further to make sure your $$ are actually going to support your intent and not to put $$ in the pockets of some private person or organization. Ask whether your donation is tax deductible - check the website and other documentation - if it is not an IRS 501(C)(3) AND DEDUCTIBLE - RED FLAG.
