Virginia Beach is located in the South Hampton Roads of Virginia on the Atlantic Ocean at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. This independent city is the most populous city in Virginia and is also the 40th largest city in the United States. With its estimated population of 440,415 its median household income in 2007 was aproximatesly $61,000. Some of the population over twenty-five hold a bachelor's degree or higher, and 90.4% have a high school diploma. This city has a total area of 497.3 square miles; 248.3 square miles of land and 249.0 square miles of water.
Perhaps one of the most well-known parks is the world-renowned Mount TrashmorePark, clearly visible from I-264 when traveling to the oceanfront. The mountain is 60 ft (18 m) high and over 800 ft (240 m) long, and was created by compacting layers of solid waste and clean soil.
