The city of Tempe is located towards the south west of Arizona, in Maricopa County. The city was named in 1879 after a gorge in Thessaly, Greece known as the “Vale of Tempe” in relevance to tall butte near the river valley to the mythological Mount Olympus. Tempe is considered to be a part of the Phoenix metropolitan area, and is also bordered by the cities of Guadalupe, Scottsdale, Chandler, and Mesa. The original inhabitants of the area were the Hohokam Indians, but abandoned the area around the 1400s. In 1865, the establishment of Fort McDowell in the northern part of the Salt River allowed for the building of new towns further south along the river. Of the first settlements to Tempe, Hayden’s Ferry and San Pablo were on either side of the Hayden Butte. These were the first attempts of settlement since the disappearance of the Hohokam tribe. Tempe is where you can find the headquarters for US Airways Group, as well as Arizona State University. Another one of the major companies that are located in Tempe is the Fortune 500 company, Insight Enterprises.
