Savannah, Georgia was founded in 1733 and became the first capital of both Colonial Georgia and of the State. Today, it is home to 131,510 people who enjoy its moderate climate. The city sits on the Atlantic Ocean coast with the Fell Street Canal, Kayton Canal and the Springfield Canal empty into the Savannah River. The last canal is the Casey Canal. There were pumping stations built with the canals to keep the city from flooding.
The beautiful architecture of Savannah is seen in its many historic homes and buildings. The city is proud to have the distinction of being home to the Savannah Historic District which is one of the largest National Historic Landmark Districts in the country. The First African Baptist Church is one of the oldest African American congregations in the nation. Temple Mikve Israel is the third oldest synagogue in the country. There are many new housing developments around the city, incorporating single family homes and condominiums. Several shopping areas and malls are scattered around the area. To see the new homes or to see the historic homes, the Georgia business directory will offer names and numbers of developers, realtors and historical societies who will answer questions and arrange tours.
The Port of Savannah is one of the four major economic generators of the city, along with tourism, manufacturing and the military.
