San Mateo, California is located in the county of San Mateo. The city is in the San Francisco bay area and is a large suburb located on the peninsula of San Francisco. The city of San Mateo was incorporated in 1894.
Hayward Park, a historic estate of San Mateo, was built in 1880 and was the estate of millionaire Alvinza Hayward. The estate resided on 800 acres in San Mateo and once Hayward died the estate was converted to a hotel in 1904. Years later the hotel burned in a fire in 1920.
