St. Charles, Missouri is located in the county of St. Charles. The city lies to the northwest of St. Louis along the Missouri River. The city was founded in 1765 and west of the Mississippi River, the city is the third oldest city found in the United Sates. The city was once the capital of Missouri for five years from 1821 to 1826. St. Charles is the home of the National Weather Service that services the northeastern and central parts of Missouri as well as the southwest and central parts of Illinois.
St. Charles is home to Lindenwood University which was founded in 1827. The school was a university for women until 1995. The Lindenwood University is known as a fine liberal arts institution and was founded by Major George Sibley along with his wife Mary.
The end of Katy Trail, a state park 225 miles long, lies next to the city of St. Charles. The park is enjoyed by travelers on foot and by bike. There has been an explosive growth in population in and around the St. Charles area since the 1970's. The city is host to events and features related to the Expedition of Lewis and Clark which is said to be the original starting point of the expedition.
