Reno, Nevada is known as the Biggest Little City in the World because of all the entertainment, hotels, restaurants and shops that are crammed into its comparatively small area. One of the distinctions this city holds is that it was in Reno that Harrah’s Entertainment, one of the largest casino-resort developers in the country, got its start. It is also home to 210,255 residents and the population is rapidly growing. Its climate is desert which means that it can become very hot in summer and cold in the winter.
Reno is located not too far from Carson City, the capital of Nevada and has the dubious distinction of being the Divorce Capital of the US. Downtown Reno holds many nightclubs and theatres, as well as restaurants, entertainment and shopping complexes. The older buildings that once housed casinos are currently being renovated into condominiums, creating new urban living spaces and lifestyles. Outside of the downtown area, the city is home to new housing developments and some of the older stately homes in varying architectural styles. Semi-professional baseball, basketball and hockey are sports played in the Sierra Nevada Stadium and Reno Events Center. Squaw Valley Ski Resort, Northstar-at-Tahoe, Sierra-at-Tahoe, Alpine Meadows Sugar Bowl, Diamond Peak, Heavenly and Rose Ski Resort make up the eight world famous skiing venues of Nevada.
