Pomona, California is located in Los Angeles County and is the fifth largest city in the county. The population of Pomona is over 160,800 residents. The city is named for the Roman Goddess of Fruit, Pomona. The name was suggested by the horticulturist Solomon Gates through a city contest to name the area. Pomona was originally settled in the 1830's by Spaniards. The region became a citrus-growing area that was greeted by the railway system making the city an important stop on the railway. The city was incorporated in 1887 officially and is known for the election of Norma Torres in 2005 who was the first woman of Guatemalan heritage to hold a mayoral post outside of the country of Guatemala.
The Los Angeles County Fairgrounds is located in Pomona and hosts the Los Angeles County Fair annually along with the PowerAde Winternationals Drag Racing competition at the NHRA Pomona Raceway.
The city is home to California State Polytechnic University, Pomona which built its campus on W.K. Kellogg’s ranch, the tycoon of Kellogg’s breakfast cereal along the western corner of the city. Cal Poly Pomona has over 21,000 students and is known for its architectural and engineering programs. The programs are nationally ranked and very selective.
Pomona is home to movie star Jessica Alba, Fantastic Four, and retired professional baseball player Mark McGwire who held the single season home run record at 71. Since retirement there have been ongoing questions and allegations of McGwire's use of performance enhancing drugs during his playing days in baseball.
