Peoria, Arizona is located in the counties of Maricopa and Yavapai and is a suburb of Phoenix. The population of the city is over 142,000 and is considered the ninth largest city in Arizona. Peoria was named after Peoria Illinois which it now surpasses its namesake in population. Peoria is derived from the phrase "prairie fire."
The San Diego Padres and the Seattle Mariners use Peoria as the training facility for their spring training homes and play in the Cactus league. Ichiro Suzuki, of the Seattle Mariners, owns a vacation home in the city of Peoria.
In 2003 the city of Peoria created a Drought Contingency Plan which is in place until 2010. The city was the first in Arizona to design growth and development projects around the availability of water rather than land mass. The city also created the Desert Lands Conservation ordinance to deal with the development and protection of the native vegetation and landscape to create a comprehensive building plan that provided the greatest use of natural resources with the benefits of conservation for the public and environment.
The city is also working on plans for a revitalization of downtown Peoria's historic center. There are plans for a theatre project and other improvements to help benefit the renovation of the area to come soon. The city was listed in the Top 100 Places to Live according to Money Magazine in 2008.
