Olympia, Washington is the capital of the state and part of Thurston County. The city was incorporated in 1859 and its population is about 42,500 residents. The city of Olympia was previously home to different tribes of Native Americans throughout history. The first visit that was recorded by Europeans was 1792 during a chartered site visit from the British Vancouver Expedition.
The Olympia Brewing Company opened its doors to the brewery in 1896 and kept them open until recently in 2003. The Olympia Brewing Company brewed Olympia Beer.
The Evergreen State College was created in 1967 and established in Olympia by the approval of the state legislature. The college's presence in Olympia has developed the city into a hub for musicians and artists. The city was named recently for its downtown and easy access to outdoor activities as one of the best college towns in the United States.
The Olympia Film Society puts on a film festival that is nationally recognized each year to foster film education in Olympia. The festival shows classic, international and independent films year round at the Capitol Theater. Part of the festival is an all night screening of horror films called All Freakin' Night.
There are a variety of parks and nature conservations in Olympia. More than 5 miles of the Puget Sound waterfront is preserved in the Woodard Bay Natural Resource Conservation Area. Percival Landing Park's mile long boardwalk runs along Budd Inlet and also contains picnic areas and playgrounds. Olympia also features Yauger Park, the only public skate park and Capitol State Forest.
