One of the United States least populated states, North Dakota, is located in the Great Plains and is home to larger than life ranches and fields of golden wheat amongst the small towns of the state's great people. Dakota Territory was purchased during the period of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, and then finally split once President Benjamin Harrison signed the bill separating the states into North and South Dakota. Both states entered the union in 1889 but with such rivalry between the states, Harrison made sure the paperwork was mixed up so that no one would ever know who really admitted to the union first.
