Industry Information about Movers
Trucks represent virtually the sole means of transporting freight in intercity and local markets, usually operating zones of 50 miles or less. Such diverse products as furniture, auto products, dry cleaning, and vending machine supplies are only a small number of the massive variety of goods delivered by local trucking firms. The industry is separated into two types of establishments: private carriers who own or lease trucks to move their products to customers, and for-hire carriers who contract with shippers to transfer their furniture or other products for them. The Occupational Outlook Handbook provides an overview of the past and present in the moving industry.

Recent Trends in Movers
In 2001, the chief industry leader was Savage Industries Inc. of Salt Lake City, with revenues peaking $12.9 billion and 1,000 employees.  Many moving companies started out in one state and began expanding in other US cities; like movers in Chicago of the well-known U-Haul Co. and New Orleans movers of North American Van Lines. These same firms dominated the national intercity moving industry in the late 1990s. They were Bekins, Mayflower, Allied, North American, and U-Haul. They also operated in the local trucking industry and were amid the leaders in developing the nontraditional less-than-truckload services markets.
