Montgomery is the capital of Alabama. The city is the second most populous city and the fourth most populous metropolitan area state of Alabama.The area where Montgomery stands today, was originally inhabited by the Native American Alibamu tribe, for whom the land was named. While settlers began moving into the area in the early 1800s, it wasn’t until several years later when two businessmen founded separate towns; East Alabama and New Philadelphia. Even with the fierce competition between the two townships, both thrived and eventually combined into a single city. When Alabama became a state, the city was renamed Montgomery in honor of a Revolutionary War major-general who died while attempting to capture the Canadian city of Quebec.
There are many landmarks linked to historical events in the nation within the city of Montgomery. And many organizations, which can be found in the Alabama business directory, continue to carry on traditions. Particularly, the State Capitol Building; two blocks from where Reverend Dr. Martin L. King earned national attention for civil rights issues during his term from 1954 to 1960 as a pastor of Dexter Avenue Baptist Church. The Dexter Avenue King Memorial also resides on Dexter Avenue, for visitors as a church and parsonage of the days Martin L. King spent there.
Downtown Montgomery lies along the southern bank of the Alabama River. The most famous feature of Montgomery's skyline is the 22-story RSA Tower, built in the mid 1990s by the Retirement Systems of Alabama. Downtown also has many state and local government buildings, including the Alabama State Capitol and much more located in the yellow pages for convenience.
