Midland, Texas is located in Midland County on the Southern Plains of western Texas. The population of Midland is over 106,000 residents. The city was founded in 1881, originally as a midway point between El Paso and Fort Worth along the Texas & Pacific Railroad.
The city of Midland is the hometown of Laura Bush and the childhood home of the Bush Family including George W. Bush and Jeb Bush. Midland is nicknamed "The Tall City" in reference to its downtown skyline. The buildings were built in the mid-1980's during the Permian Basin gas and oil discoveries. The energy surge to higher prices led to a construction boom in downtown Midland. At one time the Wilco Building, a twenty-two story building in downtown was the tallest building from Fort Worth to Phoenix.
The Midland Rock Hounds, a minor league baseball team in the Texas League, calls Midland home. The team is a AA affiliate of the Oakland Athletics. The team has played at Citibank Ballpark for its home games since 2002.
Midland is host to Midland College which is an affiliate of the Western Junior College Athletic Conference. The college has won 20 championships in sports nationally since 1975 and has produced 192 All-Americans over the course of that time.
