Mesquite, Texas borders between the counties of Dallas and Kaufman. The city is a suburb of Dallas and its population is around 137,000 residents. The city is known as the Rodeo Capital of Texas hosting the Mesquite Championship Rodeo. Mesquite also is home to id Software, a video game producer of such computer blockbusters Quake and Doom.
In 1873 Mesquite, Texas was founded by an engineer of the Texas & Pacific Railway who purchased the land and soon after the railroad began making stops in the new town during its connections from Shreveport to Dallas. The city of Mesquite began to grow around the development of the railroad. Mesquite was incorporated in 1887.
A unique landmark, Mesquite is home to the largest megaplex in the world. The megaplex seats over 6,000 people and features 30 screens to watch at the AMC 30 Mesquite.
Mesquite is home to two institutions of post-secondary education, Eastfield College and Texas A&M University-Commerce. Both schools provide undergraduate degrees and Texas A&M University-Commerce offers graduate level degrees.
The City Council of Mesquite is a chamber of six Counicl members. The members hold office for two years and are responsible for selecting officers like the City Health Officer, Municipal Judge and City Manager. The Council members are elected to office but unlike the Mayor there is residency requirements tied to obtaining a seat on the council.
