Manassas, Virginia is an independent city which is surrounded by Prince William County. The city is a part of the Washington Metropolitan area and is surrounded by the city of Manassas Park. The population during a census taken in 2000 was over 35,000 residents. Manassas is located in the northern region of Virginia.
The development of the city has had a strong influence by its position being a suburb of Washington, D.C. The development of the city of Manassas has incurred major problems with the urban sprawl and traffic throughout the years.
In 1993 the city of Manassas gained exposure and notoriety from the celebrity of John and Lorena Bobbitt who actually resided just outside the city closer to Manassas Park. The separate trials of the couple were brought to court at the Prince Willam County courthouse in the Manassas city limits.
