The city of Madison is the capital of Wisconsin and the seat of Dane County. The city is between Lakes Mendota and Monona, and north of Lakes Waubesa and Kegons, thus leading to Madison's designated name; "The City of Four Lakes." Before Madison was a city, it was chosen as the capital of Wisconsin. A former federal judge purchased the land in the Wisconsin Territory in 1836 with the plan of building a capital city. Although Madison only appeared on paper at the time, the legislature voted to move the capital to Madison, primarily because of its convenient location between Milwaukee, Green Bay, Prairie du Chien and the lead mining areas to the southwest. Ultimately, being named for the much respected James Madison and having streets named for the other founding fathers only helped. Over time, and currently those streets have become filled with authentic buildings, which can be found in the Wisconsin business directory.
