Lincoln is the capital of Nebraska and the second most populated city in the state. Lincoln was first known as the village of Lancaster. The city was founded in 1859 by salt miners striving to profit from the reserves of a near Salt Creek. Omaha was the capital of the Nebraska territory during this time; which was a point of disagreement with the greater part of Nebraska's population. These “South Platters” lived south of the Platte River and disliked the hard journey to Omaha. As a result they voted to move the capital from Omaha to Lancaster, which was renamed "Lincoln" in honor of 16th president’s recent assassination. On March 1, 1867, Nebraska was declared to the Union and Lincoln was named its capital.

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln has contributed to the molding of Lincoln's culture.
