Lawrenceville, Georgia is the county seat of Gwinnett County. The population of the city is estimated at just over 29,000 residents. The city of Lawrenceville was incorporated December 1821 by the Georgia General Assembly. The city is the second oldest in the Atlanta metro area.
Lawrenceville is named after Commodore James Lawrence who was the commander of Frigate Chesapeake during the War of 1812.
The first town postmaster was William Maltbie, who suggested the name of the city in honor of the Commodore. James Lawrence is best known for his last statement before death "Don't give up the ship!" which was a command to his soldiers.
The city is home to Gwinnett Medical Center which is one of the premiere hospitals in the area. The center is a 500 bed health care facility in Gwinnett County and is separated into two hospitals and several medical facilities throughout the county.
The downtown area of the city is rich with history. Significant historical buildings in the downtown district include Lawrenceville Female Seminary and the Gwinnett Historic Courthouse.
