Lancaster, Pennsylvania is located in the south central part of the state. The population of the city is over 55,000 residents and is the eighth largest city in the state. Originally the city of Lancaster was called Hickory Town. It was renamed by John Wright, a native of the English city of Lancaster.
The Philadelphia and Lancaster Turnpike was the first paved road in the United States and presently makes up part of US Route 30. The turnpike was opened in 1795 and connected the cities of Philadelphia and Lancaster.
Lancaster was the home of some important figures in American history, James Buchanan, the fifteenth President of the United States, Thaddeus Stevens of the House of Representatives, and Robert Fulton who created the first fully functional steamboat.
Lancaster preserves its history and contributions to society through several museums throughout the city. The Demuth Museum and Lancaster Museum of Art are both dedicated to history of the arts. The Lancaster County Quilts and Textile Museum celebrates the industrial era of the Amish community. Lancaster also pays homage to its Pennsylvania Dutch heritage with two other museums, the Heritage Center Museum Lancaster and the Mennonite Historical Society Museum.
Jim Furyk, Professional Golf Association member, is an alumnus of Manheim Township High School. The school is located in Lancaster's Manheim Township suburb. Furyk is a U.S. Open champion and also won the PGA championship in 1997.
