Hyattsville is a city located in northeastern Maryland, U.S.A. According to the 2000 census, it had a population of 14,733 and is part of Prince George's County. First settled in early 1845, Hyattsville was situated within easy distance of Washington and Baltimore, fusing the city's history with the nation's history. Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission has identified 15 historic sites such as Ash Hill, Hyattsville Post Office and the Hyattsville Armory. A new residential and retail development was added to the Arts District downtown, as well as the University Town Center. The UTC houses residential condominiums, office buildings, student housing, retail space and a public plaza. The city is now home to several large restaurant chain names and other shopping/eating establishments. Hyattsville has expressed much concern over the misrepresentation of crime in the city. The surrounding areas that share the same zip code have been accredited with a high crime rate, but the crime is generally associated with Hyattsville although it is not true. The city has been depicted as an "urban ghetto dominated by poor minorities" by ABC, who formally apologized for it in May of 2006.
