Greensboro is North Carolina's third largest city. It is near the other major cities of Winston-Salem and High Point. These three cities are often called the "Triad." Greensboro has a population of about 258,000 people. The Great Smoky Mountains lie to the west of the city, and the Atlantic coast beaches lie to the east of it. Greensboro is ethnically diverse, with sizeable populations of Asians, African Americans, Eastern Europeans and Latinos. Greensboro is the site of a historic event from the 1960s civil rights movement; four black students in 1960 went into a Woolworth's and demanded service, at a time when everything was still heavily segregated. This event spurred sit-ins and protests at other chains across the nation, leading to the eventual desegregation of many chain stores across the country. The University of North Carolina has a location in Greensboro, as well as several other colleges and universities, such as Bennett, Guilford, and the Elon University School of Law. There are many parks in Greensboro, and plenty to do. There are theatres, a ballet school, an opera company, a symphony orchestra and many musuems, including the Reed African American Heritage Musuem.
