The city of Flushing is located in the north central part of New York City in Queens. Flushing was founded in 1645, and is about ten miles from Manhattan. It was a Dutch settlement on Long Island, and is one of New York City’s largest and most diverse neighborhoods. Some of Flushing’s ethnic groups include individuals of Asian, Hispanic, European, and African American decent. Flushing offers an exciting outdoor experience with multiple public parks and playgrounds, all of which are supervised by the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation. The park is 1,225 acres, and has hosted two World Fairs in 1939-1940 and in 1964-1965. Because of the two World Fairs, the infrastructure of the park is a reflection of the construction performed for the Fairs. Flushing is also the home to Citi Field and the National Tennis Center, where the United States Tennis Open is held.
