Florissant is a suburb located in St. Louis County, Missouri. As a suburb of St. Louis, it has a total estimated population of 51,387, according to the 2000 U.S. Bureau data. Florissant has a total area of 11.7 square miles, with 0.3 square miles as water. It was founded in 1967. It is unknown when the first settlers came to the Valley of Florissant, but it is considered one of the oldest settlements in the state. By the time the government was formed in 1786 by Francois Dunegant dit Borosier, there were at least 7 plantations and 40 people in the area. The community is mostly centered on the St. Ferdinand parish, but is now an inner suburb of St. Louis. Florissant is home to several schools, at every level. Two theological colleges - Saint Louis Christian College and the Gateway College of Evangelism - are located in the city, as well as an extension campus and a barber college.
