I have never met Ms. Manley, and after a telephone consultation with her today, I don't anticipate ever putting myself anywhere near her practice. My parents used her for estate documents in the past, so when my mother needed to make some changes, I arranged for the consultation with Ms. Manley, my mother, me, and my brother three weeks ago (the consultation was today). My brother and I live on the west coast, which is why we were facilitating things by phone. I understand why Ms. Manley needed to discuss things with my mother prior to having other family members on the line. However over the course of a half hour private conversation with my soon to be 82 year old mother, multiple things were already agreed to before others came on the line to even begin discussing what we wanted to know and accomplish. Once the four way call finally happened, Ms. Manley proceeded to inform us that she could not discuss matters with anyone but my mother directly. At one point she stated that she was not an expert in certain estate planning matters, at which point I asked for clarification so we could go elsewhere for our concerns. At this point she recanted her statement, I can only guess because she saw business going away. Then she said that to discuss certain questions concerning probate vs trusts, we would need to make an appointment for all of us to do this in person in her office (this was after less than 15 minutes of the call, so it is not like we were taking up more time than initially allotted at this point). She was reminded of where everyone lived, at which point she declared that my brother and I should fly in to get our questions answered (I'll just fire up my private jet now!) At this point I left the conversation, realizing that if her tact and common sense and accounting skills were that poor that she thought one would fly across the country to get some basic will and estate planning questions answered, BEFORE any services were even agreed to much less discussed, then there was no way I would waste my time discussing anything further. I waited three weeks for a consultation, having done a lot of research in preparation, as well as having a long list of questions prepared. What she gave us (after cashing my $150 deposit weeks ago) was much, much less than what I learned from the internet. I never got going on my questions, because her initial attitude was not one of someone I would ever work with, and her initial responses indicated that either she thought my family was composed of idiots or that she fell into that category. I decided to cut bait and run. My recommendation would be to not even consider going fishing with this one.
