Save the Environment, Save Money

As more and more people continue to consider their environmental impact through their day-to-day activities, small businesses are doing the same. Regardless of your business’ focus, there are always actions you can take to make sure you’re keeping your carbon footprint under control. The office is just as good a place as any to be green, whether you run your own business or you’re based out of the home. How can you make sure you’re doing your part to help the environment even while you’re getting down to business? Recycled office products. Believe it or not, buying recycled office products is often cheaper than buying them new. If you’re looking to save both money and the environment, recycled office products are the way to go.

The biggest culprit of wastefulness in the office is paper. This may not come as much of a surprise, but some the following may be more of a shock:

• The average office produces roughly 1.5 pounds of paper waste per employee every day

• If you were able to remove  paper from your office’s waste, your waste bill would be cut in half

• If the average U.S. office cut down their paper usage by 10%, the amount of greenhouse gas emissions eliminated would be equal to that of taking 280,000 cars off of the road

The facts above are certainly enough to make someone think twice about how they manage their paper usage in the office. The idea of completely eliminating paper in an office environment is difficult to grasp, and while it may not be completely realistic, there’s always ways in which we can cut down on our paper usage. And for the paper we do deem necessary, why not use recycled paper? Often cheaper than regular paper, you can also take peace of mind in the fact that you’re doing a service to your planet. It’s a win-win, right?

When people think of recycled materials, oftentimes they think of paper and paper alone. But there’s obviously much more than paper that’s recycled, and there are a number of office essentials which come from recycled materials other than paper. If you’re doing a lot of shipping for your business, perhaps packages to your customers, you can also invest in recycled shipping boxes. Especially for something that has such a singular purpose (to transport an item), does it really matter if it’s recycled or not? Same can be said for folders, pens, post-its, and so on. If you put a recycled product next to a non-recycled one, could you really tell the difference? Odds are that you couldn’t. And since you’re both saving cash and going green, what’s there to lose?
