Why You Need to Upgrade Your Business Router

Your router is the first and last line of defense between your business computer network and the multitude of threats present on the Internet. To best protect your invaluable business information switch from a commercial router to one specifically tailored to the needs of businesses.

In today’s wireless age the layman user has lost sight of the differences between modems and routers, primarily because most ISPs provide both products in one. As independent tools, a router connects two or more networks together while a modem connects the network to the phone line. A router, however, provides your network with Internet security while a modem does not. You don’t need a router to connect to the Internet, but you do need one to connect your computer network.

A business-class router will provide a wider range of security features to protect your network. This includes a more sophisticated firewall and better anti virus, anti-SPAM and anti-spyware protection. This is why a business router is also referred to by the term UTM, or unified threat management, because it offers a range of security features for protecting your business network. Even though your computers might already have anti virus software installed, web security experts say that adding another line of security on
the network level can really improve your network security.

There are a wide variety of business routers on the market, choosing the right one for your business is completely dependent on your needs. Companies that typically provide home tech appliances, like Netgear, are stepping into the game to challenge the companies like Cisco that have always specifically focused on offering networking tools and technology. Both of these companies are based in San Jose, California.

Obviously consider your needs and your budget as you shop for your new router. The more expensive the appliance, the better the protection, but the harder it will be to install. A savvy IT employee will be able to get a business router up and running for a small business. A larger, mid-sized business might find working with a networking specialist more cost-efficient.

A company that depends on its computer systems and information to conduct business should take every precaution necessary to ensure their safety. While basic routers might do an adequate job of protecting your home computer, the threats facing a business are far more complex and dangerous. A breach of client privacy or an infected computer system could end up costing your business thousands of dollars – don’t take that chance.
