U.S. mattress manufacturers make up a four billion dollar enterprise, producing more than 35 million units each year, according to figures released by the U.S. Census Bureau. At the manufactured level, bedding and mattress revenues amount to a 14 percent share of U.S. household furniture sales. The U.S. mattress market is generally considered well established. Census Bureau statistics reveal from 1997 to 2001, annual sales growth at the industry level tends to fluctuate modestly.

The bedding industry is one of gold, with its ability to continue to flourish throughout good and bad economic times. The U.S. bedding industry encompasses more than 600 mattress companies in service at 700 sites, primarily the top five of those corporations account for most of these sales. The largest mattress producer in the United States is Sealy Corporation, headquartered in High Point, North Carolina. Second is Serta Inc, which is headquartered in Itasca, not far from where Chicago bedding is sold. Trickling behind are smaller companies like Mattress Makers where bedding in San Diego is sold.
