There are several major sports events/teams that are associated with the city. Anchorage is home to the prestigious Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race , which starts the first Saturday of each March. The Iditarod is the most famous and longest sled-dog race in the world. It is also the home of the annual Fur Rendezvous, a winter sports carnival. As part of the carnival, the Fur Rendezvous Open World Championship Sled Dog Races, a 3-day dogsled sprint event is held every year as well. There are many parks and gardens in Anchorage. The Alaska Botanical Garden consists of over 900 species of perennials and 150 native plant species. The wildlife in these parks and areas is very diverse. There are approximately 60 grizzly bears and 250 black bears that live in the area.
