Little more than a two hour drive north of New York City, located on the Hudson River, lays the New York state capital of Albany. The second oldest city in the state and the oldest surviving settlement from the original thirteen colonies, Albany is a city filled with cultural heritage. With such a strong focus on the area's economic achievements, youth programs, and Halfmoon Project (a method for educating and preparing kids for the future with historic experiences), has captured the country’s most prestigious community recognition award, the “All American City Award” on multiple occasions.

Three centuries of history depicts the area's diverse sites and public spaces. The Empire State Plaza is a large complex of several state-owned buildings that include the newly renovated Million Dollar Staircase in the New York State Capitol to the awe inducing “Egg.” Housing two amphitheaters, the Egg draws many performing arts acts to Albany including music, dance, and diverse traditional stage performances such as: Henry Rolling, New York City Ballet, Demetri Martin, and much more. The students at the areas’ universities, cultural organizations, and residents further generate the artistic community and culture. These factors has contributed to well established venues such as the Albany Symphony Orchestra, Capital Reparatory Theatre, Palace Theatre, and Albany Institute of History and Art that provide outlets to local as well as traveling shows to the several small, private galleries. New York yellow pages can provide further ideas of local activities.

As the location of the state capital, Albany’s economy is heavily dependant on the state government with much of its population employed by state departments and legislators. At the center of “Tech Valley,” Albany is a prime location for industries focusing on nanotechnology, biotechnology, information technology, and alternative energy. With the assistance of the University of Albany’s nanotechnology program, Albany is a leader in nanotechnology.
