The accounting industry is the backbone of the American economy providing financial statements and data that keep companies running. There are many different businesses involved in bookkeeping usually being ran by Certified Public Accountants. There are also the big five accounting firms like KPMG. Accounting in New York City and other big cities is a large industry as many jobs are becoming available for the profession.

Trends in the Industry

With all of the scandals in the late 1990's early 2000's involving companies like Enron, the Sarbanes-Oxley Act was passed in 2002. The act shook up the accounting industry by changing a lot of the rules and regulations and creating an oversight board. Although the industry was shaken by the scandals, it made companies realize the importance of accounting and created more accounting jobs in places like Houston, TX.
